Trouble in Tahiti/Arias and Barcarolles

  • CitySpace Theatre, Civic Center Music Hall (map)

Sam and Dinah may appear to be the picture of 1950s suburban marital bliss in this jazz-influenced opera by the composer of West Side Story, but looks don’t always reveal the whole truth.  This poignant tale of the pitfalls of American marriage follows a young couple as they try to revive their sagging relationship.  Featuring a vivid score and darkly funny text, Trouble in Tahiti is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining.

Also accompanying this opera is a staged version of Bernstein’s song cycle Arias and Barcarolles which was his ode to the complexities of love and relationships.

Presented in English in the intimate 85-seat CitySpace Theatre, this unique production will allow you to get an up close and personal view of the intricate nature of relationships as interpreted by Leonard Bernstein, one of the cultural giants of the 20th century.  This production is a part of “Leonard Bernstein at 100”, the two-year global celebration of his life and career.
